NBA Top Shot: What Is It and How to Get Started
Updated: Mar 4
NBA Top Shot is a blockchain-based platform created by Dapper Labs, in partnership with the NBA. In Top Shot, you can view, buy, or sell officially licensed digital video highlights. The simplest way to look at it is that it's a website that sells digital NBA trading cards, as well as hosts a marketplace where you can sell cards that you own to other collectors. The cards are called "moments" in this digital world, and these moments are placed randomly in packs. The packs are sold for varying prices, depending on the rarity of the moments inside them. In the past, packs have ranged from $9 (base) to $1,000 (legendary). You can buy these packs, as well as buy, sell, or showcase moments, on the NBA Top Shot website.
How do I get started?
One of Top Shot's greatest selling points is its accessibility and ease of use. It is easy to get started. All you have to do is sign up on the website.
You can start collecting your moments either by buying packs or going to the marketplace to look at what other collectors are selling.
The packs say they are all sold out. What should I do?
Packs have been a little tricky lately. The supply for packs has not yet caught up to the increase in demand that Top Shot has been seeing in the past couple weeks. Currently, you cannot buy packs from the website unless there is a pack drop. Pack drops happen infrequently. Base set drops usually happen randomly, while Special set drops are announced at least 8 hours prior to drops. The best thing to do to be aware of these pack drops is to join the Discord channel. For more information about packs and pack drops, I wrote a blog post detailing it here.
Since there are no packs, now what?
If you'd like to get started without waiting for packs, the marketplace is the place to be. In the marketplace, you can find all available moments for sale by other collectors, and see how much they are selling for.
What can I pay with?
You can pay with a credit card, or with crypto.
How do I get to the marketplace?
Once on the website, you can click on the marketplace link at the top. There, you can choose whether you want to search by typing a name of a particular player, or by using filters.
You can filter by players, teams, sets, series, tier, price, serial number, game dates, and player position.
I have chosen a moment. What do these words and numbers mean?
You can find a lot of information about the moment just from the search page itself. Here's what it all means:
When you click on a moment, you can view the moment, find more information, and refine your search:
Scrolling down, you can find more information about the moment such as its description, edition size, highlight stats, and player stats.
Tip: clicking on edition size shows you who owns each moment, and whether there are moments that are still in packs.
Once you've bought a moment, it's yours! You should be able to see it in your collection and do whatever with it as you please--display in a showcase, gift, or sell.
